Thuyloi University (TLU) is the leading institution in training high-quality human resources, conducting scientific research, developing and transferring advanced technologies in the fields of science, engineering, economics and management, particularly in water resources, environment, and disaster prevention and mitigation. The university operates under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.

History of TLU

The predecessor of Thuyloi University was the Water Resources and Electric Power Academy, established in 1959. In January 1963, the Academy was reorganized into four units: the Intermediate School of Electricity, the Intermediate School of Water Resources, the Institute of Water Resources Science, and Thuyloi University. At its inception, the University offered three academic programs: Hydraulic Construction, Irrigation, and Hydrology. Laboratories were set up for Strength of Materials, Hydraulics, Hydraulic Engineering, Hydropower, and Soil Mechanics, among others. In 1965, the university’s administrative building was completed, featuring numerous classrooms and laboratories for teaching purposes. That same year, the Hydropower program (7th intake) was also launched.

In June 1965, the university was evacuated to the mountainous area of Nghia Phuong Commune, Luc Nam District, Bac Giang Province. In 1966, the Irrigation Mechanical Engineering program (8th intake) was launched. In 1967, the Construction Engineering program (9th intake) was added. In 1970, the university returned to Hanoi, but in 1972 it was once again evacuated to Viet Yen and Hiep Hoa districts in Bac Giang Province, as well as several other locations. In 1973, the university moved back to Hanoi.

From 1975 onwards, the university reorganized its academic programs toward broader, more logically specialized disciplines, including:

  • Hydraulic Structures;
  • Hydrology and Environmental Engineering;
  • Hydropower and Hydroelectric Power Stations;
  • Irrigation and Land Reclamation;
  • Mechanical Engineering for Water Resources;
  • Water Resources Economics.

In 1979, TLU was officially recognized as a postgraduate education institution. This was also the period when the University effectively developed international relations with many institutions in the former Soviet Union, Eastern European countries, Laos, India, the Netherlands, and others.

On December 8, 1986, Southern Center for Education, Research, and Practice in Hydraulic Engineering was established, based on the Southern Hydraulic Planning, Surveying and Design Team. On February 25, 1997, Thuyloi University took over the Center and converted it into Campus No. 2 for training, under Decision No. 288NN-TCCB/QĐ by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, a name it has retained to this day.
