On September 22, 2026, Thuyloi University welcomed Prof. Sameh Kantoush from the Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI), Kyoto University, Japan, together with doctoral students, graduate students, and undergraduate students from Kyoto University, for a visit and academic and research exchange with the University.
Speaking at the meeting, President Nguyen Trung Viet warmly welcomed Prof. Kantoush and the Kyoto University delegation to Thuyloi University. He shared the University’s recent achievements in education, scientific research, and international cooperation, as well as its ongoing research activities, including those under the SATREPS project co-funded by JICA and JST. He also highlighted the potential for cooperation between the two universities in areas of mutual interest, particularly water resources management, disaster prevention, climate change, sediment management, and research related to riverine and coastal areas.
During the academic exchange session, Prof. Sameh Kantoush gave a presentation on challenges in flood management, reservoir operation, and sediment management in Vietnam. Drawing on his research in Central Vietnam, Prof. Kantoush proposed three key directions: optimizing reservoir operations based on rainfall -runoff forecasts; upgrading dam infrastructure through an integrated approach to flood and sediment management; and increasing investment in and implementation of management solutions at the river basin scale. He emphasized that effective implementation of these solutions requires close coordination among relevant stakeholders in disaster management and response.
In addition to Prof. Kantoush’s presentation, lecturers and researchers from Thuyloi University engaged in discussions on disaster warning, disaster risk management, reservoir operation, and sediment management. The two sides had a productive and constructive discussion, sharing experiences, research findings, and practical challenges facing Vietnam.
The visit also provided an opportunity for students, graduate students, and doctoral students from Kyoto University to learn more about Thuyloi University and meet with Vietnamese lecturers and researchers. It offered young members of both universities an opportunity to exchange views on education, research, and shared areas of interest in water resources, disaster prevention, and environmental studies.
Building on the similarities in their research orientations, the visit by Prof. Sameh Kantoush and the Kyoto University delegation opened up further prospects for strengthening cooperation between the two universities in the coming period. The meeting contributed to enhancing academic connections between Thuyloi University and Kyoto University while creating additional opportunities for cooperation in education and research, with a view to developing practical joint exchange and research activities in the future.
